I Loved Him First

It's Monday, September 28, 2026, and I'm sitting in my garage just chilling out, relaxing and resting from the past weekend.  My oldest's wedding went off without a hitch on the 26th.  It was a beautiful day outside and the wedding was absolutely moving.

As I sit here by myself in the quiet, feeling the cool breeze come in from the open garage door, I cannot help but be overwhelmed with gratitude for everyone that showed up and participated in such a wonderful experience.  Thank you to everyone of you.

I remember the days of the past when life was wild and unruly for us. This weekend was worth all the ups and downs, twists and turns the roller coaster has sent our way.  If you had asked me eleven years ago if I saw my son having a child at 20 and marrying the mother of his baby at 22, I would have laughed in your face and called BS.  Ya'll be lying to me.

I'm glad it wasn't something I saw in the cards.  I couldn't have ever imagined it being as good as it is for them right now. This boy of mine is now a man with his own special family.  This baby boy of mine has become more than I could have ever imagined.

I never hoped for fame and fortune for my sons.  My dream has been for them to find their way in this cruel world, be loving and intentional and find that deeply rooted connection with the one that will always make him feel loved, appreciated, respected and valued.  He found it.  On top of that, he has this amazing bond with his child that simply adores his dad.

The song Ethan and I danced to was "I Loved Him First".  That may be true but I gladly give him to his wife with a full heart knowing they're going to love each other for years to come.

My beautiful son, you have given me more love and rewarded me with two more family members to love back. I'll never be able repay you.  Parenting may be hard but the blessings are worth every second of the journey.
